About Zach Pereles

About Me

Zach Pereles is a sportswriter, researcher, analyst and editor and a 2018 graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He has experience covering a variety of sports at the professional, college and high school levels and specializes in longform analysis, feature reporting and advanced statistical work.

Currently, Zach is a senior writer for CBS Sports. He writes the CBS Sports HQ AM newsletter five days a week and contributes to the NFL and college basketball sections of the website as well with profiles, features and analyses.

 

From July 2019-October 2021, Zach worked as a sports content researcher at ESPN. He served as a lead researcher for SportsCenter and a variety of other shows and was a key contributor to the NFL, college football and college basketball teams, among others. His work has appeared on ESPN.com and on game broadcasts. Zach won a 2020 Sports Emmy for his role on SportsCenter.

Prior to his time at ESPN, Zach served as the lead basketball beat writer and columnist covering University of Virginia basketball for the Augusta Free Press. Zach was credentialed for several games throughout the season, including the Final Four in Minneapolis, where he covered the Cavaliers' title run by producing a dozen stories and co-authoring a book on the run, Team of Destiny.

In 2018, Zach interned with the Denver Broncos digital media team, where he provided beat coverage and analysis for the team's website as well as feature writing for the Broncos Gameday Magazine. Zach came to the Broncos after spending over a year working with Yahoo Sports, first as an intern in the summer of 2017 and then as a contributor from September 2017-August 2018. As an intern at Yahoo Sports, he covered a variety of sports. As a contributor, Zach covered the NFL, fantasy football, the 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2018 NCAA tournament.

 

Zach also interned at Sports Illustrated in the spring of 2017. At Sports Illustrated, he was an integral part of the magazine production team as a fact-checker, editor and writer. He also contributed several pieces for Sports Illustrated's online outlets.

 

Prior to that he served as editor-in-chief of Inside NU, SB Nation's Northwestern site, for nine months, a stint that saw the website experience significant growth in both readership and social media following. As editor-in-chief, Zach produced a wide variety of content, took charge of the editing and presentation of the stories and managed the social media accounts. Before taking the head position at Inside NU, he served as a staff writer and editor for the site.

Zach has also served as an intern for 12up Sports, a freelance journalist for the News Virginian and a staff writer for Soccer Wire. He also has experience in sports broadcasting with WNUR Sports, Northwestern's student-run radio station.
